Kingsmen, Regals Combine for Five Event Wins at SCIAC #3

LA VERNE, Calif. — Sarah Bjornson and Camden Hyde won twice and Logan Abounader added one more event win as Cal Lutheran men's and women's track & field competed at SCIAC #3 on Saturday. 

Eric Talbert ran at the Leopard Distance Carnival on Friday night as the teams headed to La Verne for SCIAC #3 the very next day. Talbert ran in the 5000 run and set the fourth fastest time in program history as he clocked 14:54.14. He placed 45th have recorded the program's first mark under 15 minutes since 1986.

At SCIAC #3 Bjornson won the pole vault and high jump as she cleared 3.15 meters and 1.60m, respectively. Hyde won two jumping events as he took the long jump with 6.46m and triple jump with 12.87m. Abounader rounded out the event wins and took the discus with 37.51m.

"The team had a successful meet at SCIAC 3 with many personal and seasonal bests," Head Coach Brett Halvaks said. "We will use the momentum from today to our advantage as we prepare for SCIAC Champs in two weeks."

The teams combined for 11 runner-up marks with the Regals having eight and the men with three. Cheyanne Rodriguez led the way with three second-place finishes. Fatima Cervantes, Carly Christensen, and Niani Jones both had one and the Regals added the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Rodriguez was dominant in the throwing events with 42.35m in the hammer, 9.47m in the shot put, and 31.53m in the discus. The silver places continued with Cervantes in the 400 hurdles with 1:15.44, Christensen with 13.24 in the 100 dash, and Jones with 4.82m in the long jump. The 4x100 relay team of Jennyfer Hernandez Rosas, Crystal Rosales, Aisha Mohammed Joji, and Christensen had 51.41 and the 4x400 team of Hernandez Rosas, Rosales, Cervantes, and Bjornson had 4:18.23. 

On the men's side, Abounader was runner-up in the javelin with 37.57m, Hyde was second in the high jump with 1.85m, and Sebastian Sawyer took silver in the steeplechase with 10:05.59. 

The Regals had three more podium finishes as Brooke Hougo, Jones, and Rodriguez were third in their events. Hougo clocked 12:40.47 in the steeple, Jones jumped 10.57m in the triple jump, and Rodriguez threw 28.10m in the javelin. 

The Kingsmen and Regals competed in 11 more events. Below are the top finishers in each event.

Next up for the Kingmen and Regals is the SCIAC Championships. The event is held on two days, April 27th & 28th.
