The Athlete of the Year awards are voted on by CLU Athletics staff after nominations from coaches and administrators for excellence in their respective sports. This year's recipients are
Braden Gonzales and
Madi Bodhidatta.
Hyde excelled as a dual-sport student-athlete for the Kingsmen basketball and track & field programs while maintaining a 3.93 GPA as a communications major and graduating a year early. Since arriving at Cal Lutheran in 2023, Hyde helped the Kingsmen basketball program capture two SCIAC Regular Season Championships, including the first in program history in 2023-24, while also contributing to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. He appeared in 47 career games on the hardwood, totaling 99 points, 84 rebounds, and 31 assists while shooting .434 from the field. This past season, Hyde played in all 26 games and made 11 starts.
On the track, Hyde quickly emerged as one of the SCIAC's top jumpers despite joining the season immediately following basketball. He earned All-SCIAC honors in 2025 with a third-place finish in the high jump at the conference championships and was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week once during the outdoor season. In 2025-26, he posted season-best marks of 1.66m in the high jump and 6.26m in the long jump, both improvements from his marks at last year's championship meet. Hyde also earned CSC Academic All-District honors in both basketball and track & field and was named to the Winter Allstate NACDA Good Works Team.
Evenson capped one of the most accomplished careers in Regals soccer history while posting a 3.91 GPA as an exercise science major. A key contributor to Cal Lutheran's 2023 NCAA National Championship team, Evenson helped lead the Regals to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances during her career, including a Sweet 16 run in 2025 and the program's first SCIAC Tournament Championship since 2011.
The forward appeared in 83 career matches with 64 starts, totaling nine goals and 16 assists, a mark that ranks among the top-10 in program history. This season, Evenson earned First Team All-SCIAC and United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Region and Third Team All-American honors after leading the SCIAC with seven assists. She started all but one match for the Regals in 2025, helping guide the team to a 17-4-2 overall record while adding four goals and more than 1,100 minutes played. She was also named CSC Academic All-District.
Gonzales made an immediate and historic impact on the Kingsmen men's volleyball program after transferring to Cal Lutheran ahead of the 2025 season. In just two years, the Libero established himself as one of the top defensive players in Division III while helping lead the Kingsmen to back-to-back NCAA Regional Championships.
The 2026 AVCA First Team All-American and FrogJump Libero of the Year finished his career with 611 digs and 2.77 digs per set, both program records despite playing only two seasons at Cal Lutheran. This year alone, Gonzales broke the single-season program records with 311 digs and 2.91 digs per set, ranking sixth nationally in total digs and 15th in digs per set. He started every match during the 2026 campaign and appeared in all but one set for a Kingsmen team that finished 23-7 overall with only four losses to Division III opponents.
Bodhidatta closes her career as one of the most decorated swimmers in Cal Lutheran history after qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships in three consecutive seasons. Throughout her career, she established herself as the face of the Regals swimming program, appearing on the school record board eight times, including all five relay records.
This season, Bodhidatta earned All-SCIAC honors in the 50 free after finishing as the conference runner-up with a school-record time of 23.10, a mark that ranked ninth nationally in Division III. She also broke program records in the 100 free and helped set another relay record during the 2025-26 season. At the NCAA Championships, Bodhidatta placed among the nation's top swimmers in both the 50 free and 100 fly. Across her career, she earned five All-SCIAC honors, two SCIAC Athlete of the Week awards, and three NCAA Championship qualifications while becoming a two-time CSC Academic All-District selection.
