Box Score PASADENA, Calif. — Leading by two with under a minute remaining, Cal Lutheran women's basketball closed it out to secure a 64-61 victory over Caltech on Saturday evening.
The Regals (16-6, 11-3 SCIAC) have now won three straight games and got an important win, as they remain in first place in the SCIAC standings with two games remaining in the season.
Kaiya Mack led the Regals in scoring with 16 points on 7-10 shooting and Janna Holley also broke double-figures with 14 points.
Up 60-58 with 0:33 remaining in the contest, Mack drove hard to the basket and converted to make it a two-possession game. The Regals then forced a clutch turnover on the defensive end and hit both free throws as the Beavers (8-12, 5-9 SCIAC) were forced to foul.
It was a back-and-forth affair through all four quarters, as the game saw nine lead changes and five ties. The Beavers hit 11 three-pointers and won the turnover battle by forcing 15 Regal giveaways, but the Regals kept themselves in it by outrebounding the Beavers 41-27 and scoring 26 points in the paint.
The Beavers jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter, the largest of either team, but the Regals scored eight unanswered points to start the second quarter and led 25-23 at halftime.
The Regals did their best work in the second half, hitting 53.1% (17-32) of their shots down the stretch to get the win.
They go on the road to face Whittier (13-8, 8-6 SCIAC) next on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
