REDLANDS, Calif. —  Cal Lutheran baseball scored four runs in the top of the eighth, but their late rally wasn't enough as they fell to the Redlands Bulldogs in the first game of the series, 6-5 on Saturday afternoon. The loss brings their overall record to 8-3 and conference to 3-1. 

Chris Torres opened the game as he pitched for 6.2 innings. He allowed 10 hits and five earned runs, while striking out four.

The Kingsmen began strong as Max Heverly homered to left field at the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs answered quickly with three runs in the bottom of the inning and added one more in the second, sixth, and seventh inning. 

Bryan Tierney took over Torres and went the next 1.1 innings He allowed one hit and had two strikeouts. 

The Kingsmen gave the Bulldogs a scare as they tried to make a comeback in the top of the eighth inning. Kyle Reuser singled down the left field line, scoring Brendan Durfee. Ryan Farr added another single as Reuser and Joseph Scalzo scored. Zach Lafata got the Kingsmen even closer as his doubles scored Farr, making it a one-run game. 

Cal Lutheran had another chance in the ninth as they looked to tie or take the lead. With runners on first and second, with only one out, the Kingsmen could not convert and fell to the Bulldogs. 

The Kingsmen's next game will be at home, finishing the series with Redlands on Sunday. The doubleheader starts at 11 a.m.
