Kingsmen Pick Up Win In Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Cal Lutheran earned an important win over Foothill College, Saturday afternoon at UC Santa Cruz, but unfortunately fell to the Banana Slugs in their first contest of the day.

"This was an extremely tough day with both of our teams playing doubleheaders," said Head Coach Mike Gennette. "We had very long delays due to the weather. We faced a lot of tough obstacles including three injuries today. It's an opportunity learn and grow."

Match 1 - UC Santa Cruz

The Kingsmen were narrowly edged 5-4 by the Banana Slugs in the first matchup.

Isaiah Volk competed as Cal Lutheran's number one and was knocked off 6-7, 3-6 in a very competitive match.

Jake Haffner was also dropped a tough contest 4-6, 3-6 in the number two spot, meaning CLU would have to rally to help their chances going forward.

Continuing his great start to his Cal Lutheran career was Darvel Lossangoye who picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win as the number three in singles. Charlie Spina followed that with a win of his own, 6-2, 6-3, in the number four spot.

Sebastian Ariza and Hitachi Hu both fell in the five and six spots. Ariza was close to taking his match, but lost the super tiebreaker 10-7.

Heading into the doubles competition, Volk and Haffner teamed up to make quick work of their opposition, 8-3.

Lossangoye and Spina also came out victorious with an 8-6 victory in their doubles match to set up a winner-take-all final.

The duo of Ryan Murphy and Sean Yaghoubi fought valiant, but barely fell 7-8 in the final match.

Match 2 – Foothill

Beginning with the singles matches due to issues with court availability, Haffner opened the contest with an 8-6 victory before Lossangoye followed with an 8-4 win.

Ariza won rather quickly in the number three spot, winning his match 8-3.

On the doubles side, Volk and Haffner remained solid to win 6-3 in their match. Lossangoye and Spina closed the competition with a 6-4 victory to clinch the overall win for the Kingsmen.

Cal Lutheran gets back to action Feb. 15 at 12:00 p.m. when they travel to St. Katherine.
