Bulldogs Take Series from Kingsmen

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran baseball team came up short in two games against Redlands as the Bulldogs defeated the Kingsmen 3-0 in game one and then 6-4 in game two as they claimed the series Sunday afternoon in Ullman Stadium.

In the first game of the day, it was a pitcher's duel. Cal Lutheran's Derek Galvin and Redlands' Adam Stead went toe-to-toe. Each pitcher saw 32 batters. Galvin threw 118 pitches and Stead threw 119. Galvin pitched 7.2 innings and struck out a season-high 10 batters. Stead got the win and struck out 11 batters.

Redlands got on the board first and got two runs in the third inning. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth as they went up 3-0.

The Kingsmen had their chances to answer, but couldn't make it happen and UR won 3-0. After the game was over, CLU had a total of eight runners left on base.

The second game saw great pitching as well. The Kingsmen came out swinging right away. After back-to-back singles from Ryne Yamashiro and Nick Coast, Weston Clark doubled to right center. He gave CLU a 2-0 lead as Yamashiro and Coast scored.

Troy Frazier made it 4.2 innings with a no-hitter. The Bulldogs finally broke through in the top of the 4th and tied the score at 2.

Pitching continued to set the tone as Cal Lutheran's Jeff Rebello and Justin Fong and Redlands' Noah Jones and Austin Williams sat down batter after batter.

Cal Lutheran got things going again in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on first and second, Yamashiro singled up the middle. Alec Iniguez scored from second and Matt Sciumbato advanced to second. Tanner Wright was the next batter up and connected on a RBI single that put CLU up 4-2.

Redlands answered the call and hit a two run homer in the top of the ninth to tie the game. In extra innings, the Bulldogs scored two more runs in the top of the tenth and held on to win the game 6-4.

Cal Lutheran (8-9, 3-5 SCIAC) is back at Ullman Stadium Thursday as the Kingsmen welcome Ursinus on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
