Kingsmen Drop Series Opener with Tigers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Occidental's Josh Cohen pitched a complete game and shut down Cal Lutheran as the Tigers defeated the Kingsmen 7-3 Friday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.

The Kingsmen dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. Cohen struck out eight batters and only gave up six hits and one earned run. The Tigers improved to 4-2 and 3-1 in conference.

Nate Wehner pitched 7.2 innings for the Kingsmen. He struck out nine batters, but also gave up eight hits and four earned runs. Wehner got the loss and is now 0-2 on the season.

Cal Lutheran took control of the game in the bottom of the first. Tanner Wright singled through the right side to start the game. Alec Iniguez then doubled and Wright advanced to third. After a passed ball, Wright scored the first run of the game and Iniguez advanced to third.

A few batters later, Daniel Stauffer grounded into a double play, which allowed Iniguez to score.

The Tigers were quick to answer and tied the game in the top of the third. Occidental then took the lead as they added two more in the sixth.

CLU made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh as Matt Sciumbato came into pinch hit. He hit a RBI single to right field, scoring Cheynne Giles.

Oxy opened their lead again as they scored two runs in the eight. They scored one more in the ninth and won the game 7-3.

The Kingsmen and Tigers are back at it tomorrow and play a doubleheader in Los Angeles at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
