Kingsmen Split with Leopards

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran baseball won the first game of the day 10-5, but fell to La Verne in the second 8-3 as the Kingsmen took on the Leopards Saturday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.

In the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) series of the year, La Verne (2-3) came out on top and won the series 2-1. The Kingsmen are now 5-4 and 1-2 in the SCIAC.

In the first game, La Verne scored the only run in the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Coast doubled, bringing up Weston Clark. Clark gave CLU a 2-1 lead as he hit a towering home run, his first of the year, over the right field wall.

Derek Galvin pitched five innings while only giving up one earned run on seven hits. He struck out six batters. Jeff Rebello came in and pitched two innings of relief. He struck out four batters and didn't allow any hits.

The Kingsmen came out on fire in the bottom of the seventh and put up five runs. Ryne Yamashiro singled in Tanner Wright for the first run. Clark then hit his second double of the game and Yamashiro and Alec Iniguez raced home. Jeff Wilson and Matt Sciumbato doubled back-to-back and each got a RBI.

Each team scored three runs in the eighth as the Kingsmen won the first game 10-5. Derek Galvin got his second win of the season and is now 2-0.

La Verne took the lead in the second game in the top of the first. In the bottom of the second, Trevor Egan hit a sacrifice fly and Clark came in to score. The Kingsmen doubled up the Leopards as Wright doubled down the left line, scoring Daniel Parr.

The Leopards scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to take the lead. ULV then scored four runs in the seventh and had a 8-2 lead. CLU got one run back in the bottom of the seventh. The game was then called early due to darkness. ULV won the game 8-3.

The Kingsmen continue the season at home as CLU welcomes Castleton to Thousand Oaks, Calif., Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
