THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On a hot, sunny Saturday morning at the Poulson Tennis Center, the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team concluded Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) dual match play against Chapman, taking down the Panthers 7-2.
A strong start in doubles set the tone for the day as the Kingsmen earned three team points off the top. Lucas Tilly and Jake Haffner cruised to an 8-2 win on court two for the first team tally of the match and shortly thereafter Andrew Tufenkian and Austin Wong put the match on court three in the book with an 8-3 victory. With Ransom Braaten returning to the courts, he and Dara Kashani teamed up at No. 1, working to an 8-4 win to complete the sweep.
Individually, Wong went on to take the first singles point, promptly defeating his court six opponent 6-1, 6-4. When Braaten earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, the match was officially won, though Michael Sulahian and Kashani both went on to earn victories as well. While Sulahian stumped the opposition in a second set 6-0 win after stealing the first game 6-4 on court five, Kashani played to a tiebreaker, edging the top Panthers player 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
The final match to go final came at court three where Tilly also needed a third set, but was on the short end of a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 decision.
Cal Lutheran (6-15, 2-5 SCIAC) will travel to the Annual Ojai Tournament next weekend as a final preparation for the 2017 SCIAC Championships a week later. Competition in Ojai will take place at various times on April 28-30.
