PASADENA, Calif. - After a tough Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) loss on Wednesday, the Cal Lutheran women's basketball team bounced back with a 20-point, 66-46, victory over Caltech on the road inside of the Braun Athletics Center today.
Although the Beavers kept things close in the first six minutes, a Haley Hodgson jumper put the Violet and Gold ahead for good with 4:05 to play in the frame. CLU held a three-point, 17-14, advantage after one quarter before the Regals rallied in the second stanza to blow by the home team, taking a 36-21 lead at the break and never looking back.
All 14 active players saw playing time and everyone had at least one scoring opportunity. CLU shot 37.9 percent from the floor and converted eight three-pointers. Free-throw shooting was much improved from the previous outing as the group combined to go 8-for-10 (80 percent).
Offensive Highlights: Nine different Regalsscored and a pair of players reached double figures for Cal Lutheran with Jessica Salottolo leading the way with 21 while Danielle Roumbos netted a career-high 10 points. Both players hit a trio of three-pointers in the win. Makenna Murray finished with nine points and Janelle Porter posted eight with a game-best four assists.
Defensive Highlights: Cal Lutheran pulled down 43 rebounds, led by Katy Lindor with nine. She also notched a block and Roumbos added a pair. Porter and Sofia Cruz had three steals apiece and Roumbos had the only other one.
The Opponent: Caltech (2-13, 0-7 SCIAC) looked to Grace Peng for 15 points and Samantha D'Costa for 13. They each had seven rebounds and Nika Haleftiras matched Porter with four assists. Peng also earned the only three CIT steals of the game. Defensively, Elizabeth Eiden was a menace with five blocks.
Cal Lutheran (8-6, 4-1) will be back on the hardwood Wednesday, Jan. 18 when the Regals travel to La Verne to play the Leopards at 7:00 p.m.
