PASADENA, Calif. - The No. 22 Cal Lutheran baseball team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Round Robin play with an 11-1 victory against Caltech as freshman Ryan Bill came two outs away from a no-hitter on the road on Wednesday afternoon.
CLU def. CIT 11-1
The Kingsmen jumped on the Beavers early, plating two runs apiece in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead behind RBI hits from Trey Saito, Jimmy Jauregui and Chad Clark.
CLU added three more in the fifth, capitalizing on two Caltech errors while Jauregui came through with another RBI single.
Ramsey Abushahla pushed the score to 8-0 with an RBI double in the sixth inning to drive home Davey Casciola and the Kingsmen put up three more runs in the top of the seventh to put the seven inning mercy rule in effect. Sinjin Todd drove a double to the left center gap to score Weston Clark and Max Price bought Todd home on a single to right field to round out the scoring.
On the mound, Bill was exceptional, carrying a no-hitter into the top of the seventh with one out before an infield single by Garrett Levine broke up the bid. He finished with just one hit allowed, one walk and two strikeouts while a run was later charged to him in the inning.
At the plate, Jauregui led the way with a 3-for-3 performance with two runs and two RBIs while C. Clark, W. Clark and Brad Fullerton each added two hits. Five other Kingsmen tallied one hit apiece to total 14 hits in the game for the Violet and Gold.
