THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On a warm, windy day at the Poulson Tennis Center, the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team made a memorable senior day for four Kingsmen as the home team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Occidental in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.
Prior to the match, Chris Hartman, Jesper Lunding-Johansson, Gio Valdez and Bradley Win were recognized and thanked for his contributions to the program.
Once play got going, CLU swept through doubles play. The No. 3 pair of Dara Kashani and Michael Sulahian dropped the first set before turning the tides and earning the first Violet and Gold point of the day with an 8-3 victory. At No. 2 doubles Hartman and Lucas Tilly battled to a competitive 8-5 Win to push the CLU advantage to 2-0 before the senior No. 1 duo of Lunding-Johansson and Valdez capped off the sweep with an 8-4 win.
After a short break, singles play opened and the winning ways continued. Hartman earned the first individual team point of the day by downing Anoop D'Souza 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets at court number four. Sulahian put the match in the books with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Lunding-Johansson worked his way to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 and Kashani notched a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2. The next point to be inked was from Tilly who won 6-4, 6-0. Rounding out the match on the first court was Valdez who won easily 6-0 before a more competitive second set that went 7-5 in favor of the Kingsmen to complete the sweep.
Occidental is winless in 2016 and wrapped up its regular season today.
Cal Lutheran (3-12, 2-4 SCIAC) has one more regular season match on Saturday, April 30 at Chapman with first serve set for 2:00 p.m. Before that, CLU will send student-athletes to the annual Ojai Tournament on Friday to Sunday, April 22-24. Times and opponents are yet to be determined.
