Kingsmen Complete Sweep of Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran baseball team completed its sweep of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday with a 4-0 victory followed by an 8-2 win in 10 innings at Arce Field.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Kingsmen were led by starter Evan Peterson who tossed eight shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six. Landry Kiyabu entered in the ninth inning and shutdown the Stags in order to earn the save.

CLU carried over its hot bats from Friday afternoon and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second inning. Davey Casciola drew a walk to lead off the game and Ramsey Abushahla drove him home with an RBI single. In the second inning, Jimmy Jauregui doubled and came around to score later on an RBI groundout by Trey Saito. The Kingsmen added two more in the fifth on solo shots by Max Price and Chad Clark.

Abushahla and Price led the way at the plate, both going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Justin Caña, C. Clark, Jauregui and Saito also added hits.

In the nightcap, the Stags and Kingsmen battled into extra innings where the Violet and Gold exploded for six runs in the tenth to put the game out of reach. CLU scored two runs in the third on RBI's from Casciola and C. Clark, and Kiyabu pitched the Kingsmen out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth to force extras.

In the top of the tenth, CLU racked up five hits including RBI singles from Price, Brett Green and Weston Clark while Casciola broke through for a two-RBI double to left center. Sinjin Todd added an RBI after reaching on a fielder's choice.

Kiyabu (1-1) earned the win after entering in the ninth inning and pitching two shutout innings with two strikeouts. Marshall Pautsch started the game for CLU and picked up a no-decision after going six innings allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out one.

At the plate, seven different Kingsmen got a hit led by Caña who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Next Up: Cal Lutheran (14-8, 9-3 SCIAC) will take a break from conference play to host Pacific Lutheran this Thursday, Mar. 31 at 3:00 p.m. inside Ullman Stadium.
