THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -After rain washed out the last two scheduled competition dates for the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team, the Regals were able to return to action today hosting Vassar (N.Y.) in non-conference action. A 2-1 deficit after doubles play was reversed as CLU stole five of six singles sets to win 6-3.
CLU took a quick 1-0 lead as Gianna Cupo and Emily Werman controlled court number one, defeating the top VC duo 8-1. The visiting Brewers took the match on court three against a the newly paired Christie Kurdys and Shelby Kubota to even the score and the second court battled to animated extra points. Rebecca Gold and Sarah Seeman led early on, but the pair of Kelsey Van Noy and Lauren Stauffer chipped away and stole the 9-7 win.
Trailing after doubles, the Regals gritted down and took five of the six singles sequences to put a 'W' in the books. Gold knotted the teams at two points apiece after defeating high school rival Shayna Becker 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5. The teams were tied at 3-3 as well after a Cupo 6-4, 6-1 win over Kate Christiansen on court No. 1.
While Kurdys battled to a full third set, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 both Seeman and Werman took opponents to extra points in their respective second sets. At No. 2 and No. 3, they won 6-2, 7-5 and 6-0, 7-5.
Cal Lutheran (4-2) will return to the Poulson Tennis Center on Tuesday, March 15 to play the back end of a doubleheader with the Kingsmen after rain postponed an originally scheduled match with Principia (Ill.) from Friday. Teams will serve at 5:30 p.m.
