REDLANDS, Calif. - The blue skies turned gray in a rain shortened five-inning Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) baseball game between the Cal Lutheran and Redlands today. The Kingsmen used early offense to hold off the Bulldogs in a 6-2 victory.
CLU def. UR 6-2 (5 innings)
The Kingsmen took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, sparked by a two-run homerun from shortstop Austin Kay and tacked on a run in the fifth, by way of a Davey Casciola homer, for a 5-0 advantage. Redlands got one back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Violet and Gold regained the five-run lead with another run in the fifth when Ramsey Abushahla scored for the second time of the game after legging out an infield single. Although CLU added a pair more in the top of the sixth, a rain delay ensued and once the game was officially called, the score reverted back to the end of the fifth.
Offensively, CLU collected nine hits. Gabe Gunter was 2-for-2 and Chad Clark was 2-for-3 as each drove in and scored a run. Kay finished with two RBIs and Abushahla hit the plate a pair of times.
Trey Saito (4-1) earned the win after tossing a 62-pitch complete 5.0 inning game. He struck out a pair and scattered six hits while throwing 39 of his pitches for strikes.
Notables: CLU stretched its win streak to six games. Casciola has homered in back-to-back games and Kay notched his second career homerun, and second in three games, today.
The opponent: Redlands scored on a double, wild pitch and RBI single by Mitch Samson in the third and a solo homerun from Aaron Singh in the fifth.
Up Next: Cal Lutheran (9-4, 6-1 SCIAC) and Redlands (10-6, 7-3) meet again tomorrow, Saturday, March 12, at Ullman Stadium for another pair of SCIAC games with first pitch set for 11:00 a.m. on George "Sparky" Anderson Field inside of Ullman Stadium.
