LOS ANGELES, Calif. - A close first quarter swayed in favor of the Cal Lutheran women's basketball team on the road tonight as the Regals took a 33-22 advantage into the locker room and controlled the pace of play in a 71-47 rout of Occidental to earn a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) sweep over the Tigers this season.
Offensive Highlights: Chelsea Jacoby and Jessica Salottolo were the only two players to reach double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Both Grace Derksen and Kiana Gray came off the bench for seven points and Liana Minassian and Janelle Porter each handed out a pair of assists tonight. CLU combined to shoot 34.8 percent from the field, connecting for five three-pointers. At the free-throw line, the Violet and Gold went 20-for-25 with Jacoby turning in a 7-for-8 performance.
Defensive Highlights: Leading the way for all players tonight was Taylor Messick who grabbed nine rebounds, including five at the offensive end of the court. Haley Hodgson and Trianna Owen grabbed seven apiece and Tatiana Dunlap notched five as the Regals pulled down 55 overall. Cal Lutheran combined for six blocks from as many different players. The four steals also came from four players.
The Opponent: The Tigers looked to Erin Matsumoto for nine points and Midori McElwee for six rebounds. Occidental fell to 6-10, 2-5 SCIAC.
Notables: Cal Lutheran swept the season series with Occidental, winning the SCIAC opener against the Tigers by a 60-45 margin on Dec. 18. The CLU win streak has been stretched to a dozen games after the victory tonight.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (13-3, 7-0) is on the road for the second straight game on Saturday, Jan. 23 when the Regals travel to Chapman to face the Panthers for the first time of the year.
