THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - This morning for the final time of 2015 the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team stepped onto the Poulson Tennis Center courts for a competition. In the last Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) dual match of the spring, CLU swept past Caltech 9-0.
After Moises Cardenas and Andrew Slater were recognized prior to the final home match of their careers, the doubles teams opened a 3-0 team lead.
Cardenas and Jesse Knight teamed up for an 8-5 win over Caltech brothers Ruthwick and Sathwick Pathireddy. On the No. 2 court, Fergus Scott and Oliver Thornton doubled up Morgan Lebby and Rushikesh Joshi 8-4 while the No. 3 tandem of Slater and Gio Valdez cruised to an 8-2 win over Ishan Mehta and Alexander Henny.
Once singles action got underway, Knight won with ease, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 and Cardenas also had a solid showing as the No. 1 with wins of 6-1, 6-2.
Both Slater and Valdez posted 6-2, 6-2 victories, winning at No. 6 and 3, respectively. The match at No. 2 for Scott was more challenging as he won 6-4, 6-2. The closest sequence of the day came at No. 4 singles where Thornton squeaked out a third set tiebreaker victory after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0. In the tiebreaker, Thornton used an 11-9 win to clinch his match and complete the sweep.
Cal Lutheran (9-11, 4-3 SCIAC) will sent student-athletes to compete at the Ojai Tournament next week with SCIAC Championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 1-2 in Pasadena, Calif.
