WHITTIER, Calif. - At Whittier this morning in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road match for the second straight day, the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team bounced back from a tough Friday showing to defeat the Poets 8-1.

The Kingsmen produced a doubles sweep to take a quick 3-0 lead. At No. 1 Moises Cardenas and Jesse Knight cruised past Troy Chavez and Tyler Linscott 8-0. The No. 2 team of Fergus Scott and Oliver Thornton also had no problem with their opponents, Sam Farmer and Ian Ross, as the CLU duo posted an 8-1 victory. Facing a tougher challenge on court No. 3, Andrew Slater and Gio Valdez eventually doubled up David Stanko and Shogo Shimizu 8-4.

Once singles play got underway, the Violet and Gold continued to take down the Purple and Gold with wins at No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. The victories did not come without a battle as four of the six sequences went to third set tiebreakers.

Slater and Knight disposed of their opposition without trouble, winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively, at No. 6 and 5. Cardenas played a full third set on the first court where he won 6-3 and dropped the second set 6-1 before bouncing back for a 6-3 third set win.

A close first series of games for Scott saw the CLU sophomore win 7-6 and though he fell 6-1 in the second, he came back to win the third 1-0 (10-5). Valdez had a similar fate at No. 3 where the first year player won 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) in a rematch with Shimizu.

Thornton and Linscott exchanged 6-2 victories, but the Poets got the upper hand in the tiebreaker for the only WC point of the day.

Cal Lutheran (8-11, 3-3 SCIAC) evened its league mark as the regular season winds down with just one match remaining. On Saturday, April 18, the Kingsmen host Caltech for the season finale, which also serves as senior day.
