THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - This afternoon, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team proved to be too much for the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team to handle as the Stags dropped the Kingsmen 9-0 at the Poulson Tennis Center.
Starting with doubles action, the No. 2 and No. 3 teams of Oliver Thornton and Gio Valdez and Fergus Scott and Andrew Slater gave their Stags opponents a run, but each fell 8-5. The No. 1 team also dropped its doubles match as CMS took a quick 3-0 lead.
After the visiting squad cruised through the first five singles series, the battle at No. 1 proved to be the closest of the day with Moises Cardenas and Skyler Butts battling to a third set. Cardenas controlled the first set of games, winning 6-3 before Butts stormed back with a 6-2 second set to force a tiebreaker, which he stole 6-1.
Cal Lutheran (4-5, 1-2 SCIAC) is back on the courts for a non-conference match on Tuesday, March 10 when the Kingsmen host Trinity (Texas) for a 1:00 p.m. first serve.
