THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Today the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team hosted Lewis & Clark from the Northwest Conference at the Poulson Tennis Center for a non-conference match that went to the Pioneers by a score of 8-1.
Doubles play opened with identical results of 8-4 on each of the three courts. LC took a 2-1 lead, with the lone CLU point of the day coming from the No. 3 pair of Sarah Baker and Rebecca Gold.
Once the student-athletes took the courts as individuals, Cal Lutheran needed full third sets at both No. 5 and 6 where Annette Sousa and Shelby Kubota swapped positions. Sousa cruised to a 6-0 victory in the first set, but her opponent Glenna Gee-Taylor stormed back for 6-2, 6-2 victories in the second and third to steal the match. Kubota sandwiched 6-0 and 6-3 losses with a second set tiebreaker victory by a 7-6 (7-5) margin.
As has been the case many times this spring, Emily Werman was the last Regals player in action, today falling in a tough third set tiebreaker, 6-7, 6-3, 0-1 (10-8) after recovering from an early deficit at No. 3.
Cal Lutheran (5-7) will head to Northern California for a pair of matches over spring break. The first opponent will be Division II Dominican on Saturday, March 28, at UC Santa Cruz, in an 11:00 a.m. first serve before closing out non-conference action against the Banana Slugs on Sunday at noon.
