REDLANDS, Calif. - Despite a cold shooting performance, the Cal Lutheran women's basketball team pulled out a 58-48 victory against Redlands inside Currier Gym on Saturday night.
The Regals shot just 33.9 percent (21-for-62) from the field and only 50 percent from the free-throw line (11-for-22), however the Bulldogs shot an even lower percentage hitting just 31.1 percent of their field goal attempts.
Redlands took an early lead in the game but neither team led by more than four points in the first half. Trailing 17-16, the Regals took their first lead of the game on a Jessica Salottolo lay-up with 9:15 remaining in the opening period.
CLU continued to trade baskets with the Bulldogs and with 12 seconds left in the half, Sofia Cruz found Taylor Messick for a jump shot to give the Violet and Gold a 28-27 lead entering the break.
Chelsea Jacoby fueled the Regals in the opening minutes of the second half with a made free-throw followed by a three-pointer on the very next possession.
Redlands cut the five-point lead down to one, 34-33 and Jacoby responded by burying another shot from behind the arc. Her three-pointer sparked an 8-0 run and gave CLU a 42-33 lead.
Just minutes later, CLU would take their biggest lead of the game with a lay-up from Trianna Owen to go up by 10 points. The Bulldogs made numerous runs cutting the Regals lead to five, but every time the Violet and Gold responded and brought their lead back to double digits.
Jacoby picked up her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Salottolo and Katy Lindor also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Messick pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Regals.
Redlands was led by Victoria Fakalata who was the only Bulldog in double figures with 10 points.
Cal Lutheran (14-6, 9-2 SCIAC) will be back on the road against La Verne this Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
