THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Coming off back-to-back thrillers, the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team had its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener spoiled by Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday morning at the Poulson Tennis Center.
Despite the 8-1 team loss, Moises Cardenas had a strong No. 1 singles showing where he defeated Connor Hudson 6-3, 6-3 for the lone CLU point of the day. The senior student-athlete remained undefeated in his final season with the win.
Cal Lutheran nearly stole the doubles set on the No. 2 court as Jesse Knight and Ian Slater battled Jonathan Kim and Jake Yasgoor to a 9-7 final, coming up just short.
Another close match took place at No. 4 singles where Gio Valdez played to a tiebreaker in the second set, falling 10-7 to lose by 6-2, 7-5 margins.
Cal Lutheran (3-2, 0-1 SCIAC) will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Occidental. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
