ORANGE, Calif. - In their first taste of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action this year, the No. 10 Cal Lutheran baseball team blanked Chapman 5-0 at Hart Park on Friday afternoon.
Scott Peters (2-0) picked up his second win in as many starts after he threw all nine innings and allowed zero runs, two hits and struck out six.
While Peters was mowing down the Panthers at the plate, the Kingsmen put together 10 hits on offense led by Austin Kay who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Ramsey Abushahla who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The duo teamed up for the first run of the game after Kay roped a single to left to score Abushahla in the top of the second.
Max Price led off the top of the third inning with a solo homerun, his first as a Kingsmen, to give CLU a 2-0 lead and Collin Crowl came up with a two-out, two-RBI double to score Abushahla, who reached on a single, and Sanchez, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Both teams were held scoreless for four frames until Kay connected for another single to drive home Abushahla in the top of the eighth and give the Kingsmen a 5-0 lead.
The CLU defense helped Peters out with a double play in the bottom of the eighth and Peters took matters into his own hands in the ninth retiring the side 1-2-3 to give the Kingsmen the win.
Price finished 2-for-5 and Spencer DuBois was 1-for-3 at the dish for CLU while Gabe Gunter joined Crowl with one hit for the Kingsmen.
Cal Lutheran (4-0, 1-0 SCIAC) will return to Ullman Stadium tomorrow, Feb. 21 for a doubleheader against Chapman with game one set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
