CLAREMONT, Calif. - Over the weekend at the Gary Troyer Tournament co-hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer, the Cal Lutheran men's water polo team went 3-1 with a big win over Division I George Washington as well as a pair of Division III victories against conference foe La Verne and Washington & Jefferson while falling on a last minute goal against DI Fordham.
CLU def. W&J 19-10:
To start the weekend off, Cal Lutheran dove in against Washington & Jefferson, earning a 19-10 victory with seven players scoring twice apiece and 14 overall finding the back of the net. Jack Acampora and Chris Gardhouse handed out three assists apiece and Mats Albins drew three ejections in a game that the Kingsmen took care of the ball, turning it over just twice. Defensively, Jake Venckus recorded five saves and Zack Card had a field block while Gardhouse and Ben Russell each earned three steals.
CLU def. GW 12-11:
An upset of Division I George Washington sent the Kingsmen home with a 2-0 showing on day one of the Gary Troyer Invitational. Defensively, Nick Loomis was solid with 14 saves, adding a pair of steals, as the goalkeeper. Card recorded two field blocks while contributing with a game-high five goals including the game winner with 1:45 remaining in regulation. Gardhouse produced a hat-trick of his own with three. Acampora drew three ejections for the Violet and Gold and overall, CLU combined for five assists.

The start to Saturday was sour as the Kingsmen dropped an 8-7 decision after allowing a late goal, with 44 ticks to play, followed by a turnover. Gardhouse finished with another hat-trick while adding two assists and three steals. Ryan Moguel also had a solid game with two goals, a pair of assists and one of the five team drawn ejections. Card added his fourth field block of the tournament and matched Gardhouse with three steals.

To wrap up the Gary Troyer Tournament, the Kingsmen and Leopards needed two overtime periods, but it was the Violet and Gold that walked away victorious. CLU took a 7-3 halftime advantage, but a huge fourth quarter from LV tied things up and sent the teams into a pair of three minute overtime periods. Card controlled things offensively with five more goals and an assist while Camron Hauer added a hat-trick with a pair of assists and Albins tallied two goals. Acampora and Moguel each drew two ejections. Nine players came up with a steal, Russell notched a field block and Loomis recorded 12 saves.
Notables: The Kingsmen evened their season record and moved to .500. Card scored 13 goals this weekend with three assists, two drawn ejections, five steals and four field blocks. Gardhouse finished with eight goals, seven assists, seven drawn ejections and seven steals.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (6-6) plays two more non-conference games this week as final preparation for the start of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition. On Friday, Oct. 9, CLU will travel to the Cal Baptist Tournament to play Fresno Pacific at 3:20 p.m. and host CBU at 6:00 p.m.
