REDLANDS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's water polo (12-12, 5-7 SCIAC) wrapped up its 2025 season with a hard-fought 10-9 loss at Redlands (10-18, 8-4 SCIAC) on Saturday morning in its final SCIAC matchup. The Kingsmen showed resilience and defensive toughness in the last leg of a string of road matches to end the season.
Cal Lutheran shook off an early 2-0 deficit in the first quarter and quickly turned the momentum.
Paul Patterson sparked the offense with the team's first goal at 3:52, and
Brody Swarm followed with a finish at 1:46, pulling the Kingsmen even by the end of the opening frame.
Cal Lutheran carried that momentum into the second period, delivering one of its strongest defensive stretches of the day. The Kingsmen held Redlands scoreless while
Zachary Isaac and
Max Gerdeman added two goals of their own to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was a high-paced offensive battle, with the teams trading goals throughout. Patterson fueled the Kingsmen's attack with two more scores to complete his hat trick, while
Nic Mastropoalo, Gerdeman, and Swarm each added key goals of their own. Every Redlands strike was met with an immediate Cal Lutheran response, keeping the game tight and the intensity high.
Redlands edged ahead in the fourth with a pair of goals midway through the period, but the Kingsmen refused to back down. The defense came up with several crucial stops, and Cal Lutheran continued to generate chances down the stretch. Despite the late push, Cal Lutheran couldn't quite find the tying goal in the closing minute.
The Kingsmen conclude their season at 12-12, highlighted by strong individual performances, growth across the roster, and an unwavering competitive edge. Despite the loss, the future remains bright for Cal Lutheran men's water polo.
