NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - For the ninth straight year and the 12th time in the past 13 years the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags claimed the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's Tennis Championship. On Saturday in the championship final, the Stags did what they had done all season and swept all matches, this time defeating Pomona-Pitzer 9-0.
CMS 9, PP 0 (Championship Match)
A day after dropping its first points of the conference season, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps renewed its dominance as it won all three doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of Warren Wood and Joe Dorn topped Anthony Bello and Chris Wiechert 8-6 and the No. 2 pairing of Skyler Butts and Neel Kotrappa barely edged Jonathon Kim and Sam Crawford 9-8. The Stags' third doubles group of Nikolas Marino and Zhenya Pereverzin got passed Connor Hudson and Graham Maassen 8-6 to complete the sweep.
In the singles portion of the match, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps again swept all the matches including big wins from Daniel Morkovine and Pereverzin.
WC 5, CLU 4 (Third Place Match)
Fifth seeded Whittier swept all three doubles matches against the Kingsmen and rode the momentum for a third place finish. David Konstantinov and Chris Schommer got the Poets going with an 8-2 victory over Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy. Troy Chavez and Samuel Farmer followed that with an 8-6 victory over Moises Cardenas and Fergus Scott and Mark Anthony Kenney and Shogo Shimizu got the third point of the match when they defeated Ian Slater and Jesse Knight 8-6.
Cardenas would get CLU its first point of the match when he beat Kostantinov in the No. 1 singles 7-6, 7-4 and Nichols got the Kingsmen to within one after defeating Schommer 7-6, 6-2. Slater and Scott both won their singles matches but it was too little too late as Farmer defeated Treacy 6-2, 6-4 and Chavez clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sean Handley.
UR 8, CU 1 (Fifth Place Match)
Redlands won its second match of the tournament, nearly sweeping the Panthers Saturday morning. UR won all three doubles matches with Max Licona, Teddy Jones, Tom Suchodoloski, Patrick Lipscomb, Teddy Burchett and Jake Ly all combing to win their respective games.
Chapman's Troy Akin picked up the lone point for the Panthers, winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
CIT 7, OXY 2 (Seventh Place Match)
The Beavers picked up arguably their biggest win of the season, taking down the Tigers 7-2. Caltech took two of three doubles matches thanks to wins from Ruthwick and Sathwick Pathireddy and Luka Mernik and Devashish Joshi .
Occidental would get back on track with a doubles win as Jeremy Kirchoff and Kevin Siebs defeated Morgan Lebby and Rushikesh Joshi and then Josh Dancu was a 7-5, 6-1 victor in the No. 1 singles. The Beavers would rally though, winning the rest of the six singles matches and picking up their sixth win of the season.
