THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A day after falling to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team rebounded with a solid 8-1 win against Redlands in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action Saturday afternoon. The Kingsmen were able to atone for an earlier season loss to the Bulldogs were they led 4-0 but surrendered five straight points and allowed Redlands to win 5-4.
The match's turning point came in the No. 3 doubles match where CLU's Jesse Knight and Ian Slater trailed 5-1 before rallying back and winning 9-8 (4) against Teddy Burchett and Jake Ly. The win gave CLU the three-point doubles sweep as Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy won the No. 1 match 8-4 and Moises Cardenas and Fergus Scott took the No. 2 8-2.
Riding the momentum of the doubles, CLU continued its strong play during singles with Nichols picking up a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 and Sean Handley earning his first win in three matches, defeating Burchett 6-3, 6-3.
Slater clinched the match for the Kingsmen as he took down Gram Leahy 6-2, 6-4 while Scott got his singles record above .500 (6-5) with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ly.
A showdown of two of the top players in the West Region pitted Cardenas against Patrick Lipscomb in the No. 1 singles match. Cardenas won a closely-contended first set 7-5 before Lipscomb took the second 6-3. Electing to play a full third set instead of a super-tiebreaker, Cardenas buckled down and eventually won 6-3 to give CLU its eighth point of the day.
Cal Lutheran (4-8 (3-1 SCIAC) will continue its final stretch of conference opponents this regular season as it takes on Chapman on Friday, April 11, at 2:00 p.m.
