WHITTIER, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's tennis team continued its winning ways against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponents as it defeated Whittier 7-2 Saturday and remained unbeaten against league foes this season.
The Kingsmen used a strong doubles showing to get off fast start against the Poets. CLU's No. 1 pairing of Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy defeated David Konstantinov and Chris Schommer 8-5 before Moises Cardenas and Fergus Scott won their third straight No. 2 doubles match, beating Sam Farmer and Troy Chavez 8-2.
Ian Slater and Jesse Knight gave CLU the three-point doubles sweep of Whittier when they defeated Mark Anthony Kenney and Tyler Linscott 8-6.
Cardenas got CLU its fourth point of the afternoon when he improved his No. 1 singles record to 7-2 after taking down Konstantinov 6-3, 6-3.
Nichols fell to Schommer 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match but Treacy got CLU its clinching point after he topped Farmer 6-1, 6-3.
Slater dispatched Kenney 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 in the No. 5 game and then Scott rounded out the match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Linscott.
Cal Lutheran (3-6, 2-0 SCIAC) has a crucial non-conference match next when it hosts defending National Champion and No. 3 ranked Williams (Mass.) on Tuesday, April 1. The match will get underway at 2:00 p.m.
