THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Trailing 3-0 after doubles, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team stormed all the way back to even things at three but Pacific Lutheran would win two of the final three singles matches and defeat the Regals 5-4 Monday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center.
CLU fell into a quick hole after trying a variety of new combinations in the doubles pairings. In the No. 1 doubles match, Rebecca Gold and Dana Raugust fell to Leah Newell and Samantha Lund 8-4. CLU's No. 2 pairing of Shelby Kubota and Lindsay Murphy hung tough with Allison McClure and Mariah Siemon before falling to the Lutes duo 8-6. In the final doubles match, Kari Ayres and Katie Carroll were paired together for the first time this season and were defeated by Emily Bower and Megan Byers 8-2.
Despite trailing by three, Cal Lutheran showed resolve during the singles portion of the match as Murphy and Sarah Baker picked up wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 games respectively.
Kubota then got CLU to all square when she breezed past Siemion 6-1, 6-1.
Needing to win two of the final three singles contest to secure the win, only Gold came out victorious in her match. Playing as the No. 2, Gold dropped the first set 6-4 before rallying in the second 6-2. The freshman than won the third set tie-breaker 10-4.
Unfortunately for the Regals, Byers defeated Raugust in the No. 3 match and Bower got past Rebecca Drake 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 game while wrapping up the match for the Lutes.
Cal Lutheran (2-6) will resume Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Friday, March 28, when it takes on Occidental in Eagle Rock, Calif. The match is set to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
