CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's water polo team took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in their second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game of the season, and fell at the hands of the Stags 15-8 at Axelrood Pool on Wednesday afternoon.
CMS got off to a quick start taking a 2-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game but the Kingsmen rallied for two goals of their own to tie the score. The Stags responded with two more goals and a CLU goal off of nice ball movement brought the Violet and Gold within one, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter.
The tide of the game turned after the Stags outscored the Kingsmen 5-2 in the second quarter and took a 9-5 lead into the half.
In the second half, CMS continued to score, adding three in a row to start the quarter and take a commanding 12-5 lead. The Kingsmen answered back with a goal to stop the scoring streak but time would not allow for a comeback.
The Kingsmen were led by Zach Graper who scored three goals on seven attempts in the game and also added a field block and a drawn ejection. Shea Craig provided two goals for CLU while Mike Arteaga and AJ Franklin added one apiece. Asante Sefa-Boakye pitched in a goal for CLU and tied for the team-high with two assists along with Zack Card. Six different players registered a steal and Ryan Moguel led the team with two drawn ejections.
Goalie Jesse Owen was kept busy throughout the contest and tallied nine saves.
Cal Lutheran (4-11, 0-2 SCIAC) will continue SCIAC play this Friday, Oct. 25 when they stay on the road to face La Verne at 11:00 a.m.
