CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 9 Cal Lutheran baseball victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps today on the road marked the 20th win of the season for the Kingsmen who silenced the Stags, 18-1, in a seven inning Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) series opener.
The two-run first inning in which Nicho DellaValle and Trevor Koons scored with Nick DeLorenzo doubling in the ultimate winning run was all the offense the Kingsmen would need though they would tack on nine in the second, two in the third, four in the fifth and one more in the seventh. CLU collected 15 hits and did not commit an error in the field.
The Kingsmen combined for six extra-base hits with DellaValle finishing a homerun shy of the cycle. Garrett Smith used a bases clearing double in the fifth to push his RBI total to five, which was a game-high.
Both DellaValle and Smith produced 3-for-4 days at the plate for the Violet and Gold today. Petersen, Koons and Mike Vinyard also had multi-hit games with two apiece. Kevin Leonard scored three times while seven other starters crossed the place a pair of times. DellaValle, DeLorenzo and Jake Petersen tallied two RBIs each. The final hit of the game for CLU came by way of pinch hitter Atherton Kniseley.
Petersen(4-1) threw a complete game, allowing just one run and striking out seven. The southpaw surrendered just four hits with three coming by consecutive Stags players in the bottom of the third to generate the lone CMS run of the game.
CLU has notched 20 or more wins in each of the last five seasons. They remain atop the league standings as well.
Cal Lutheran (20-6-1, 13-3 SCIAC) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-20, 2-14) will close out their series with a doubleheader at Ullman Stadium tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m.
