REDLANDS, Calif. - After cruising to a 5-0 victory over Caltech in the morning, the No. 7 Cal Lutheran men's tennis squad was upset, 5-4, by No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer on day one of the 2012 SCIAC Tournament hosted by Redlands.

The Kingsmen earned a round one sweep of the Beavers, 5-0, as the tournament format has the first set of matches playing to a decision as opposed to playing to conclusion.
Doubles action got out to a fast start for CLU, winning all three matches 8-0. Nicholas Ballou and Ray Worley combined to defeat Luka Mernik and Devashish Joshi at the No. 1 spot, followed by Connor Treacy and Justin Wilson winning at No. 2 over Alex Runkel and Jeff Shea with Thomas Millet and Marcelo Sousa rounding out the sweep, beating Amol Kamat and Fred Zhao at No. 3.
Although only two singles matches were needed for the team victory, CLU went on to win the remaining five they played. No . 5 man Nic Jacobs defeated Zhao 6-0, 6-0 and Clark Myers was victorious 6-2, 6-1 over John Chen at the No. 6 spot.
In the second match of the afternoon the No. 2 seeded Kingsmen fell to the No. 3 seeded Sagehens. The match was decided at 5-2 before CLU earned the final two points of the day.
PP got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action with the No. 1 duo of Ballou and Worley earning the only victory for CLU. They defeated Max Sabel and Frankie Allinson by an 8-2 margin.
Ballou and Worley went on to win at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles spots, respectively. Ballou defeated Tommy Meyer 6-4, 6-2 while Worley battled Sabel to a three-set, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 victory. Rounding out the CLU victors was Millet, whose 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 performance at the No. 5 singles spot earned him a win over Allinson.
Cal Lutheran (14-8, 6-2 SCIAC) will play Saturday, May 5 at 10:00 a.m. against Redlands (16-8, 4-4) for third place. The teams will face off at the Redlands courts.
