CLU Secures Two Seed for SCIAC Tourney

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran men's tennis knocked off its eighth nationally ranked opponent of the season following an 8-1 win over No. 25 Whittier at the Poulson Tennis Center on Saturday. Senior Justin Wilson won at singles and doubles in the final home match of his collegiate career.

For the third time over the past four matches Cal Lutheran took a 3-0 lead into singles action following a doubles sweep. Nicholas Ballou and Ray Worley ran the table in the SCIAC regular season following an 8-4 win at first doubles over Julian Seneviratne and Patricio Carregha.

Wilson was off to a solid start in his final match at the Poulson Tennis Center, pairing up with Connor Treacy for an 8-2 victory at second doubles. Thomas Millet and Marcelo Sousa completed the sweep winning 8-6 over Matt Herron and Shogo Shimizu.

The top five players in the Cal Lutheran lineup earned straight sets singles victories. Wilson earned his 45th career singles win and 14th doubles victory during Saturday's match.

Whittier's Shogo Shimizu won the third set super tiebreak over Cal Lutheran's Marcelo Sousa to avoid the sweep. Sousa forced the tiebreak after winning the second set but eventually fell to Shimizu 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).

Cal Lutheran guaranteed itself the No. 2 seed for the SCIAC Championships which are set to begin on Friday, April 4, at Redlands. The Kingsmen will face No. 7 seed Caltech (0-14, 0-6 SCIAC) in its opening round match at the event.

Cal Lutheran (13-6, 5-1 SCIAC) left the CLU campus within hours of its conference win heading to Northern California. The Kingsmen will take on nationally ranked No. 12 UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, April 22, at 10 a.m.
