CLAREMONT, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer broke open a tie game with nine two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand Cal Lutheran baseball a 15-7 conference road loss on Sunday afternoon.
Box Score: PP 15, CLU 7 - F
A misplayed potential inning ending groundout to preserve a tie score heading into the ninth inning allowed the go-ahead Sagehens run to score. When the dust settled Pomona-Pitzer had scored nine runs in the eighth, all with two outs, following the Kingsmen defensive miscue.
The Cal Lutheran dugout watched its deficit grow from one run, to two, then to four following an Eric Munzer two-run single. After the Kingsmen brought in their third pitcher of the frame the deficit grew to five, before Marc Okuma's bases clearing double left little hope of a CLU comeback.
In total the rally featured one error, two hit batters, four walks, and three run-scoring base hits capped off by a Travis Bowers RBI-single. Bowers and Munzer were the main offensive catalysts combining for a 7-for-10, four RBI day at the plate.
Cal Lutheran trailed 6-2 through five innings with its runs to that point coming courtesy of solo homers from Mike Vinyard in the fourth and Garrett Smith in the fifth. Both would later collect run-scoring hits to spark a game-tying seventh inning rally and combined to go 4-for-6 with four RBI and score five of the team's seven runs.
CLU starting pitcher Byron Minnich tossed 7.1 innings, the same as in his previous start against Pomona-Pitzer. Sagehens starter Stuart Gano allowed four runs in six-plus innings of work and did not factor in the decision. Robert Weller picked up the win after tossing two innings of relief.
Cal Lutheran (20-12, 15-8 SCIAC) remained three games back of La Verne (23-11, 18-5 SCIAC) after the Leopards lost 7-3 to Occidental. The Kingsmen will host Whittier (18-15, 12-11 SCIAC) on Monday, April 16, in a make-up game from this past Friday.
