THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran softball took its talents off the collegiate diamond and into the community last weekend, as the Regals joined the Camarillo Girls Softball Association (CGSA) for its first Sunday Funday clinic of 2026.
Sunday Funday is a fall development program hosted by CGSA for players ages 6-14. The program brings together athletes at varying stages of their softball journey, from beginners learning the game for the first time to experienced players looking to refine their skills. Sessions are held each Sunday throughout the fall and are organized by age group.
Cal Lutheran softball has been involved with the program for several years, with Regals players returning each fall to work with CGSA's young athletes. The annual clinic gives Cal Lutheran student-athletes a chance to contribute outside of their collegiate season while strengthening the program's ties to the Ventura County softball community.
This year's event marked the first Sunday Funday under
Lindsay Gardner, who took over as head coach of the Regals in August 2026.
"We are thrilled to launch this partnership with Camarillo Girls Softball," said Gardner. "Having 21 of our Regals coach 31 youth players provided an elite 1:2 mentor ratio across seven offensive and defensive stations. Seeing the smiles and confidence grow throughout the day was unforgettable. We look forward to continuing this bond by hosting CGSA at a home game this season—giving them a full game-day experience from running out on the field for the national anthem to serving as our bat girls—as we work to inspire the next generation of players and leaders in our community."
The clinic was made possible through the coordination of CGSA Director of Player Development Darryl Joynt and CGSA leadership, who worked with the Cal Lutheran program to bring the Regals to the organization's fall schedule.
"An event of this scale doesn't happen without incredible leadership, and I want to extend a massive thank you to Darryl and Kristen at CGSA," Gardner said. "We are deeply grateful to them for hosting Cal Lutheran to kick off their Sunday Funday clinics and for working tirelessly behind the scenes to make this entire experience possible. Their dedication to the Camarillo softball community is inspiring, and they have built a phenomenal environment that allows both youth players and our college athletes to thrive, connect, and grow the game together."
Joynt echoed the appreciation from CGSA following the event.
"A perfect day on the dirt for our Camarillo Girls Softball community! We are so grateful to Cal Lutheran University's first-year head coach
Lindsay Gardner and 21 Regal softball players for attending and managing an outstanding clinic for our very first Sunday Funday for 2026," Joynt said. "It was an overall fantastic and memorable experience for everyone involved, and we are excited to continue growing this wonderful partnership!"
"Having a service mindset is the heart of who we are at Cal Lutheran and something we instill in our students. The more we serve, the more impactful we are as leaders. Community events like these are an important part of helping our student-athletes become the leaders of our future," said
Elizabeth Brooks, Interim Vice President and Director of Athletics.
As Cal Lutheran Athletics continues to build relationships throughout Ventura County, local organizations interested in partnering with Cal Lutheran teams for community service, youth clinics or other outreach opportunities are encouraged to connect with the appropriate coaching or support staff.
