LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Cal Lutheran football junior quarterback
Joe Farley was named SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Week following a standout performance that helped the Kingsmen open conference play with a historic 40-14 victory over Redlands on Saturday night.
Playing in front of the home crowd at William Rolland Stadium, Farley led the Kingsmen to their first Smudge Pot victory at home since the trophy was established in 2012, keeping the trophy in Thousand Oaks for another year. After Redlands took an early lead and later tied the game at 14-14, Cal Lutheran closed the night with 26 unanswered points to pull away in the second half.
Farley completed 16 of 26 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 10.0 yards per attempt with a long of 43 yards. He connected with
Tyler Woodworth on a 35-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to put the Kingsmen ahead for good before finding
TeNorris Merkel for a 32-yard score early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead.
Farley also added a four-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, accounting for three total touchdowns in the 40-14 victory.
The win moved the Kingsmen to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play, while successfully defending the Smudge Pot Trophy after Cal Lutheran reclaimed it with a road victory at Redlands last season.
The weekly honor marks Farley's first SCIAC Athlete of the Week selection of his career, and the first for Cal Lutheran this season.
The Kingsmen return to action this Saturday, October 3, at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
