Regals Pull Away at Oxy, Strengthen SCIAC Standing

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo earned a strong road victory on Saturday morning, defeating Occidental 13-8 at the De Mandel Aquatics Center to avenge an earlier one-goal contest and solidify its standing in SCIAC play.

The Regals (12-11, 8-2 SCIAC) set the tone early, jumping out to a 4-2 lead in the opening period behind a pair of goals from Olivia Hurley. Cal Lu continued to control the pace in the second, matching its first-quarter output with four more goals to take an 8-4 advantage into halftime.

Despite the Tigers finding some rhythm in the third quarter, the Regals maintained their cushion. Reyna Clark provided two of the five Cal Lutheran goals in the second half, helping the Regals carry a 10-6 lead into the final frame.

In the fourth, CLU put the game out of reach with three more goals, closing out the 13-8 victory and securing a much more comfortable result than the teams' previous meeting earlier this season.

Hurley led the Regals with a hat trick, while Clark and Jacqueline Brandon each contributed two more goals. Aleaha Gonzalez and Chloe Gardhouse each tallied three points, combining for two goals and four assists. In goal, Izzy de Souza recorded seven saves and two steals.

With just two regular season games remaining, CLU sits at 8-2 in SCIAC play and holds a firm grasp on third place in the conference standings heading into the final stretch.

The Regals return home on Wednesday, April 8, hosting Redlands at 4 p.m. Cal Lutheran earned a decisive 20-5 victory in the first meeting between the teams earlier this year.
