THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo turned a slow start into a statement win on Wednesday afternoon, overwhelming Redlands 20-3 at the Samuelson Aquatics Center behind a massive scoring surge.
After the teams traded goals in a quiet opening quarter, the Regals (13-11, 9-2 SCIAC) erupted in the second period and never looked back. Cal Lu outscored the Bulldogs 6-2 in the frame to take control, then completely dominated the second half.
In total, the Purple & Gold put together a staggering 19-1 run after the early stages of the game, including scoring the final 14 goals unanswered to close out the contest.
Lauren Lohmeier led the offensive explosion with six goals, consistently finding space and finishing at a high level throughout the match.
Kelsee Espitia followed with four goals and an assist, playing a key role in the Regals' decisive push, particularly in the fourth quarter where she scored three of her four.
Hudson Geier added a well-rounded performance with two goals and three assists, while contributions came from across the roster as nearly every Regal recorded at least one point.
Franki Court added two goals and an assist, and
Aleaha Gonzalez chipped in a goal and an assist as part of the balanced attack.
Defensively, Cal Lu was just as sharp. The Regals held the Bulldogs scoreless over the final 16 minutes while forcing turnovers and limiting quality looks.
Izzy de Souza recorded 11 saves in the first half, and
Sophie Raquel followed with four saves in a shutout second half effort.
The Regals will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 11, hosting La Verne at 11 a.m. for Senior Day. Cal Lutheran opened conference play with a dominant 25-3 victory over the Leopards earlier this season.
