THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Behind a strong performance in goal from
Bella Bravo, Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse battled through much of Wednesday night's home opener before Chapman pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 21-8 win at William Rolland Stadium.
The Regals (0-4, 0-4 SCIAC) opened the scoring early when
Josie Oparanaku converted a free-position attempt just over two minutes into the game. The Panthers answered with three straight goals to take the lead, but Oparanaku struck again late in the first to cut the deficit to 3-2 after the opening quarter.
Cal Lu briefly took control in the second. Back-to-back man-up free-position goals from
Sydney Shin and
Sydnee Hill gave the Regals a 4-3 lead, but Chapman responded with four unanswered goals to carry a 7-4 advantage into halftime.
The Panthers extended their lead early in the third quarter, but CLU continued to battle.
Madison Soforenko got the Regals back on the board midway through the period off an assist from Shin, and Shin followed moments later with a goal of her own to make it 9-6. Oparanaku later completed her hat trick, and
Alexa Miller added her first career goal with 48 seconds remaining in the quarter to bring Cal Lutheran within five at 13-8 heading into the final frame.
Chapman (1-2, 1-2 SCIAC) pulled away in the fourth quarter, scoring eight more unanswered goals to seal the win.
Bravo delivered a standout effort in goal for Cal Lutheran, recording 21 saves while facing 48 Chapman shots. Oparanaku led the offense with three goals and seven draw controls, and Shin finished with two goals and an assist.
Cal Lutheran returns to action on Monday, March 9, hosting Emerson College in a nonconference matchup at 4 p.m.
