Regals Earn First Win of Season Over Emerson

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season on Monday afternoon, defeating Emerson 15-12 at William Rolland Stadium.

The Regals put together their most complete performance of the year, placing six different players on the scoresheet while outshooting the Lions 36-23 and dominating the ground ball battle 36-16.

Cal Lu wasted little time setting the tone, as Madison Soforenko opened the scoring midway through the first quarter off an assist from Marley Hunter. Josie Oparanaku followed with a free-position goal less than a minute later to give the Regals a quick 2-0 lead.

Emerson responded with a pair of goals to briefly tighten the score, but the Regals kept the pressure on. Soforenko netted her second goal of the quarter off a pass from Oparanaku, and Sydney Shin capped the period with a goal assisted by Soforenko to send CLU into the second quarter ahead 4-2.

The Regals extended their advantage in the second frame behind back-to-back goals from Sydnee Hill. Shin added another goal off Soforenko's second assist of the day, and Oparanaku converted a man-up free-position attempt late in the quarter as Cal Lutheran carried an 8-5 lead into halftime.

Emerson cut into the deficit early in the third, but the Regals quickly responded. Hunter scored her first career goal to restore momentum before Soforenko struck again off an assist from Hill. Oparanaku later added another man-up goal, and Hill connected on a man-up finish from Hunter as Cal Lutheran maintained a 12-8 edge heading into the fourth.

The Lions mounted a brief push early in the final period, scoring twice to trim the margin to two, but Soforenko answered with her fourth goal of the game off a pass from Alexa Miller to stabilize the Regals' lead.

Cal Lutheran added a pair of key late goals to secure the win. Marina Markrud scored her first career goal off an assist from Miller, and Shin sealed the victory with her third goal of the afternoon in the final minute.

Oparanaku's three-goal performance also marked a milestone moment, as the senior reached 100 career points.

Soforenko led all scorers with four goals and two assists, while Hill and Shin each added three goals. Oparanaku finished with three goals and two assists, and Hunter contributed a goal and two assists along with a team-high five ground balls.

Bella Bravo anchored the defense in goal for Cal Lutheran, recording seven saves.
