CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran softball ruffled some feathers on Friday afternoon, delivering a composed 4-2 conference victory over Pomona-Pitzer on the road.
With the win, the Regals improve to 7-12 overall and 2-5 in SCIAC action, while the Sagehens fall to 7-14 (1-3 SCIAC).
Cal Lu wasted no time setting the tone, capitalizing on a Sagehen miscue in the first inning as
Danielle Diaz drove in
Reyna Perez with an RBI single. Pomona answered in the bottom half, but the Regals stayed steady and continued to apply pressure at the plate.
Lilah Ramos-Vaca helped spark the offense in the third with a double and later came around to score on an RBI single from
Jessica Waters, giving Cal Lutheran a 2-1 advantage.
After the Sagehens evened the score in the fourth, the Regals delivered the decisive response in the fifth. Diaz led off with a single and
Sofia Aviles followed with a walk before
Samantha Swerdloff came through with an RBI single to center.
Brooke Strahm added a sacrifice fly to bring home Aviles, putting Cal Lu in front 4-2.
That was more than enough for
Kalli Strahm, who was sharp in the circle. The left-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just two runs while keeping Pomona off the board over the final three innings to secure her fourth win of the season.
At the plate, Diaz led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Ramos-Vaca added two hits and a run scored. The Regals totaled nine hits and played clean defense, committing no errors.
Cal Lutheran returns home tomorrow, March 21, to continue the SCIAC series, hosting Pomona for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
