Sagehens Respond, Take Doubleheader from Regals

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – After opening the series with a strong road win, Cal Lutheran softball clashed with a surging Pomona-Pitzer lineup on Saturday, falling in both games of the doubleheader at Hutton Field.

With the losses, the Regals move to 7-14 overall and 2-7 in conference play, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-14 (3-3 SCIAC).

GAME ONE: POMONA-PITZER 11, CAL LUTHERAN 1 (6 INN.)
Pomona's offense proved too difficult to contain throughout the day, breaking open both contests with big innings and consistent pressure at the plate.

In the opener, Cal Lu struck first in the third inning as Mia Reveles drove in Rylee Carrillo with an RBI groundout. The Regals held a 1-0 lead into the fifth before the Sagehens erupted for seven runs in the frame, stringing together timely hits to take control of the game.

Pomona then added four more runs in the sixth to secure the run-rule victory.

Sofia Aviles and Samantha Swerdloff each recorded two hits to lead CLU, which totaled six hits in the game.

GAME TWO: POMONA-PITZER 9, CAL LUTHERAN 4
The Sagehens carried their momentum into game two, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Cal Lutheran answered with a run in the bottom half and later evened the score at 2-2 in the third on an RBI single from Aviles.

However, Pomona responded again with a three-run fourth inning and continued to add on, finishing with 16 hits in the game.

The Regals showed some fight late, picking up runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including an RBI double from Brooke Strahm, but were unable to close the gap.

Aviles led the offense in game two with two hits and two RBI, while Mia Reveles added a pair of hits. Cal Lutheran finished with eight hits in the contest.

UP NEXT
The Regals will step away from SCIAC play next week, but continue non-conference action at home on Wednesday, March 25, hosting Williams College for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
