THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran baseball team continued its strong weekend on Sunday afternoon, defeating Puget Sound 9-3 at George "Sparky" Anderson Field.
The Kingsmen used a four-run third inning to seize control and received a solid outing from their pitching staff, which limited the Loggers to just four hits on the day.
Cal Lutheran struck first in the opening inning without recording a hit.
Kai Caranto drew a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch before
Daniel Orozco lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Kingsmen a 1-0 lead.
Puget Sound answered in the third after an error helped put a runner in scoring position, allowing Ethan Nakamura to bring home Travis Ujimori with a sac fly to tie the game at 1-1.
The Kingsmen quickly responded with their biggest offensive frame of the afternoon later in the inning. Caranto again created pressure on the bases and scored on a wild pitch to put Cal Lutheran back in front.
Philip Jeong followed with an RBI single to right field before
Wes Lynch executed a sac bunt that plated another run.
Troy Anderson capped the rally with an RBI single to left-center, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Puget Sound chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Preston Crockett drove in a run with a groundout in the fourth, and another run came home on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Cal Lutheran added insurance in the bottom half of the fifth when Jeong was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single up the middle from Lynch to make it 6-3.
The Kingsmen continued to extend the lead in the later innings. In the seventh, Anderson doubled down the left-field line and eventually scored when
Eric Gonzalez laid down a sac bunt to stretch the advantage to four runs.
Two more runs came across in the eighth, as Orozco was hit by a pitch and scored on a double down the left-field line by
Ellias Rubio. Jeong followed with an RBI single to center to cap the scoring and give Cal Lutheran a 9-3 lead.
On the mound,
Liam Kropp earned the win after allowing two runs, one earned, over four innings while striking out two.
Wade Treloggen,
Luis Luhrs, and
Ryan Jung combined to finish the game, holding Puget Sound scoreless over the final four innings.
At the plate, Anderson led the Kingsmen with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double and an RBI. Jeong added two hits and two RBIs, while Rubio drove in a run and scored twice. Lynch also contributed a pair of RBIs as Cal Lutheran totaled nine hits and drew seven walks in the win.
