THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Keene State on Saturday at George "Sparky" Anderson Field, rolling to a 15-0 victory in game two before grinding out a 5-4 win in the finale.
The Kingsmen combined dominant pitching with timely hitting across both games, securing the sweep one day after their dramatic walk-off win.
GAME ONE: CAL LUTHERAN 15, KEENE STATE 0
Cal Lutheran wasted no time taking control in the opener, scoring three runs in the first inning.
Kai Caranto drew a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Daniel Orozco before
Aidan Buntich and
Jona Dawson each delivered RBI singles to make it 3-0.
The Kingsmen added three more runs in the second as
Eric Gonzalez walked and Caranto launched a two-run home run to left field.
Wyatt Crosby later scored on a sac fly by
Ellias Rubio to extend the lead to 6-0.
On the mound,
Oscar Lopez turned in a strong start, striking out six and keeping Keene State off the scoreboard through 6.1 innings.
Cal Lu broke the game open in the seventh, scoring four runs despite not recording a hit in the inning. Dawson brought home a run with a sac fly after a wild pitch sequence moved Buntich into scoring position.
Philip Jeong followed with another sac fly before Caranto and Rubio each added RBIs to push the lead to 10-0.
The Kingsmen continued to pile on in the eighth.
Alec Nava highlighted the inning with a two-run double to right field, and
Landen Adair added an RBI walk before a wild pitch and
Ruben De La Rosa groundout capped the five-run frame and made it 15-0.
Aidan Buntich closed the game on the mound, striking out four over the final 2.2 innings to seal the shutout.
Caranto finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Rubio and Dawson each drove in two runs. Nava added a two-run double as part of the Kingsmen's 11-hit attack.
GAME TWO: CAL LUTHERAN 5, KEENE STATE 4
The series finale proved to be far tighter as both teams traded momentum throughout the afternoon.
After two scoreless innings, the Kingsmen struck in the third. Rubio opened the scoring with an RBI single down the left-field line, and Jeong followed with a two-run double to put Cal Lutheran ahead 3-0.
Keene State responded in the fifth inning, stringing together three extra-base hits to even the game. Trevor Snow tripled to drive in the Owls' first run on the day before RBI doubles from Jonathan Chatfield and Otis Follet tied the contest at 3-3.
The score remained locked until the eighth when Cal Lutheran produced the decisive rally. Jeong singled and later scored when Nava ripped a double to left-center field to give the Kingsmen a 4-3 lead. Moments later, Crosby delivered an infield single to bring home
Troy Anderson and extend the advantage to 5-3.
Keene State pushed across one run in the ninth on a sac fly, but
Matt Campo was able to shut the door and earn the save.
David Zambelli got the win in relief, tossing four innings with four strikeouts after starter
Colten Hanson held the Owls scoreless through the first four frames.
Rubio and Jeong each recorded multiple hits to lead the offense, while Crosby, Nava and Jeong all drove in key runs during the late-game rally.
