Regals Split Opening Day of Convergence Tournament

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo opened play at the Convergence Tournament on Friday with a dominant 21-8 win over Austin College before falling to Iona 14-8 in the evening matchup at De Mandel Aquatics Center.

The Regals wasted little time getting going against the Kangaroos. After Austin struck first, the Regals responded with four goals in the opening period behind scores from Chloe Gardhouse, Olivia Hurley, Natalie Favazzo, and Franki Court to take control early.

The offense continued to surge in the second quarter as Cal Lu poured in seven goals to build a 11-3 halftime lead. Hurley and Gardhouse both added another score during the run while Aleaha Gonzalez, Hudson Geier, Lauren Lohmeier, and Clarisa Robles all found the back of the cage.

The Regals kept the momentum rolling in the second half, adding five goals in both the third and fourth quarters to seal the 21-8 victory.

Hurley and Geier led the offensive effort with four goals apiece, with Geier adding two assists for a team-high six points. Miranda Miller chipped in two goals and an assist while Gardhouse and Lohmeier each scored twice.

In goal, Izzy de Souza and Sophie Raquel split time in the cage, combining for 19 saves in the win.

In the evening game, Iona used a strong second quarter to pull away from the Regals.

After a back-and-forth opening frame that saw goals from Gonzalez and Robles, CLU trailed just 3-2 after the first period. Iona then erupted for seven goals in the second quarter to build a 10-4 halftime advantage.

The Regals battled throughout the second half but were unable to close the gap as both teams scored two goals in each of the final two periods.

Robles led Cal Lu offensively with four goals in the contest, while Gonzalez added three. Reyna Clark accounted for the Regals' other score.

De Souza turned in a strong performance in goal despite the loss, recording 13 saves across the full 32 minutes.
