EAGLE ROCK, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo celebrated a milestone and earned a split on the second day of the Convergence Tournament, defeating Augustana 11-6 in the morning before falling in a tight 7-6 contest to Salem on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: CAL LUTHERAN 11, AUGUSTANA 6
The Regals used a dominant fourth quarter to pull away from the Vikings, while goalkeeper
Izzy de Souza reached a major milestone by recording her 1,000th career save.
Augustana struck first in the opening period with a pair of goals before
Lauren Lohmeier added a late score to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Cal Lu then surged ahead in the second quarter, as
Kelsee Espitia opened the period with a goal followed by two more from Lohmeier to help the Regals build a 4-4 tie heading into halftime.
The teams traded goals in the third period, with Lohmeier continuing her offensive effort to keep the Regals ahead by one.
Cal Lutheran then broke the game open in the fourth quarter, scoring five goals in the final period.
Olivia Hurley tallied twice in the frame while
Aleaha Gonzalez,
Hudson Geier, and
Chloe Gardhouse all contributed during the run to secure the 11-6 victory.
Lohmeier led the Regals offensively with five goals, while Geier and Clarissa Robles each dished out two assists.
In goal, de Souza recorded 11 saves in the complete-game performance while also tallying three assists and two steals. Her save total in the game pushed her past the 1,000-career-save mark.
GAME TWO: SALEM 7, CAL LUTHERAN 6
In the afternoon, the Regals battled with Salem in a tightly contested matchup that came down to the final seconds.
The Tigers opened the scoring before Lohmeier answered to tie the game, then Robles found the back of the cage as the teams ended the first quarter deadlocked at 2-2.
The back-and-forth action continued in the second period. Gonzalez and Lohmeier each scored for the Regals as both teams again finished the quarter even, this time at 4-4 heading into halftime.
After Salem regained the lead in the third period, Hurley delivered a late goal to tie the game at 5-5 entering the final frame.
Salem scored twice in the fourth quarter to move ahead before the Regals mounted a late push. Espitia scored with eight seconds remaining to bring Cal Lutheran within one, but the Tigers held on for the 7-6 win.
Lohmeier again led the offense with two goals, while Espitia contributed a team-high two assists.
De Souza and
Sophie Raquel split time in goal, combining for seven saves in the contest.
