POMONA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse ran into a tough test on Saturday evening, falling 24-1 to No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer at Merritt Field.
The Sagehens (5-0, 4-0 SCIAC) controlled the tempo from the opening draw, scoring eight times in the first quarter and adding seven more in the second to take a 15-0 lead into halftime. Pomona finished with a 43-6 advantage in shots and a 24-4 edge in draw controls, limiting the Regals' opportunities to generate sustained offense.
Cal Lu (0-4, 0-4 SCIAC) battled defensively throughout the night, with goalkeeper
Bella Bravo recording 14 saves over 60 minutes in the cage.
Josie Oparanaku led the Regals offensively, tallying the team's lone goal on a free-position attempt midway through the fourth quarter. Oparanaku also added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Sydney Shin also placed two shots on goal, while
Madison Soforenko secured three draw controls. As a team, the Regals were a perfect 5-for-5 on clears.
Pomona showcased a balanced attack with 14 different players finding the back of the net. Maria Favret, Catherine Faucette, Carly Katzman, and Piper Higgins each scored three goals to pace the Sagehens.
Cal Lutheran will look to regroup on Wednesday, March 4, when it hosts Chapman University at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
