THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran softball team split its doubleheader with Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon, rolling to an 11-3 run-rule victory in game one before dropping the 5-0 nightcap at Hutton Field.
GAME ONE: CAL LUTHERAN 11, PUGET SOUND 3 (5 INN.)
Cal Lutheran wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, erupting for four runs in the first inning and never looking back.
Mia Reveles and
Reyna Perez opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and after a sacrifice bunt from
Jessica Waters,
Danielle Diaz drove in the game's first run with a single to right.
Sofia Aviles reached on an error to plate another, and
Cassie Jay followed with an RBI double to left.
Rylee Carrillo capped the inning with a bunt single that brought home the fourth run.
Puget Sound briefly answered with a pair of runs in the second, but the Regals responded immediately. Diaz delivered again with a two-run single to center in the bottom half, stretching the lead to 6-1.
Cal Lutheran added two more in the fourth behind Aviles' RBI bunt single, taking advantage of another Logger miscue to build an 8-2 cushion, then came the exclamation point. With two on in the fifth, Waters crushed a no-doubt, three-run homer to left field, ending the game via run rule and sealing the 11-3 victory.
The Regals pounded out 13 hits in the win. Reveles and Perez each went 3-for-4 and combined to score seven runs at the top of the lineup, and Diaz and Waters each finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Joie Steinkamp earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three.
GAME TWO: PUGET SOUND 5, CAL LUTHERAN 0
Momentum was hard to replicate for the Regals the nightcap as Puget Sound broke through in the fourth after three scoreless innings.
The Loggers created separation in the sixth, stringing together four runs on timely hits, including a two-run double down the right field line and an RBI single through the left side to push the advantage to 5-0.
Cal Lutheran was limited to four hits in the loss, featuring a double from Diaz and two hits from
Ava Torre. Aviles also added a single and stole a base.
Ava Tepesano took the loss after allowing one unearned run over four innings of work.
