THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran softball team grabbed an early lead, but just could not keep pace with No. 7 Redlands, falling 6-1 on Friday afternoon at Hutton Field.
The Regals struck first in the opening inning as
Mia Reveles ignited the offense with a double to left center. She moved to third on
Reyna Perez's sacrifice bunt, then
Jessica Waters lifted a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Reveles to tag and score for the game's first run.
Redlands answered in the third inning, taking advantage of timely hitting to move in front. An RBI single from Avery Provenzano tied the game before the Bulldogs added another run later in the inning on a single by Natalie Lowthers that allowed Provenzano to score.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth when Brooklyn Bard drove in a run with a single through the left side, pushing the score to 3-1.
Redlands created further separation in the fifth, scoring twice on a double from Adyson Kim and an RBI single by Maya Holshoe. The Bulldogs tacked on one more in the seventh on a fielder's choice to make it 6-1.
Reveles paced the Regals offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and the team's lone run scored.
Danielle Diaz,
Sofia Aviles, and
Ava Torre also recorded a hit apiece as CLU finished with five in the contest.
Despite the loss, Cal Lutheran threatened in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out behind singles from Aviles and Torre and a Redlands error, but the Bulldogs turned a double play to escape the jam and seal the win.
