TEMPE, Ariz. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo wrapped up play at the Arizona State Invitational on Sunday, closing the weekend against another pair of tough NCAA Division I opponents in ASU and the University of the Pacific.
Facing a demanding slate throughout the weekend, the Regals continued to gain valuable experience against elite competition as the program navigated a challenging early-season tournament.
GAME ONE: ARIZONA STATE 20, CAL LUTHERAN 3
Cal Lu opened the day against host ASU, falling 20-3 to the Sun Devils.
ASU struck early, scoring six times in the opening quarter to establish momentum. The Sun Devils carried an 11-2 lead into halftime and continued to apply pressure throughout the contest.
Lauren Lohmeier opened the scoring for the Purple & Gold in the first quarter, followed by a goal from
Aleaha Gonzalez. Lohmeier added another in the third quarter to lead Cal Lutheran offensively.
Clarisa Robles finished with a team-high four shots, while Lohmeier, Gonzalez, and
Hudson Geier each recorded three.
Defensively,
Izzy de Souza and
Sophie Raquel split time evenly in the cage, combining for five saves. De Souza added two steals, while
Olivia Hurley and
Jacqueline Brandon each contributed one.
Arizona State finished with 13 assists on 20 goals, showcasing depth across its lineup as 14 different players recorded at least one point.
GAME TWO: PACIFIC 19, CAL LUTHERAN 8
In the nightcap, the Regals closed the weekend with a 19-8 loss to the University of Pacific.
Cal Lu showed early energy, trading goals throughout the opening period before the Tigers built an 11-5 halftime advantage. Pacific continued to add to the lead in the second half, but the Regals remained aggressive on the offensive end.
Reyna Clark and Lohmeier each scored twice to pace Cal Lutheran, while
Kelsee Espitia,
Franki Court, Robles, and de Souza also found the back of the net. Lohmeier added two assists to finish with a team-high four points, while
Chloe Gardhouse, Geier, and Gonzalez each recorded one.
De Souza logged 24 minutes in goal and finished with seven saves, while Raquel added two saves in relief. Espitia and Robles also contributed defensively with two steals apiece.

Cal Lutheran returns home this weekend to host the Tina Finali Tournament at the Samuelson Aquatics Center. The Regals open the tournament against Wheaton on Saturday, February 14, with the first sprint set for 2:30 p.m.
